  • Soft & Hard Magnetic Substances

Materials that are easily magnetized and easily lose their magnetism are soft magnetic substances. e.g. iron, and mu-metal; they are always used as temporary magnets.

Materials that are not easily magnetized and do not lose their magnetism easily are called hard magnetic substances. They are used for making permanent magnets e.g. steel, nickel, and cobalt.
