Turgid describes something that’s swollen or congested, typically by fluids, for example, a turgid water balloon.

In biology, turgid refers to cells or tissues that are swollen from water uptake. A turgid cell is like a balloon filled with water.
Many cell types in many different organisms can become turgid due to water uptake. Some cells will lyse (plasmolyse), or split open if they become too turgid.
