A common perception among secondary school exam takers in Nigeria is that the National Examination Council (NECO) exam is not accepted internationally, so the preference for the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) exam. However, that is a wrong perception as NECO results are accepted abroad by some countries, howbeit with some additional requisitions.

The National Assembly has already passed a legislative bill mandating NECO results to be internationally accepted. The only hitch is that not all countries accept it.

As stated earlier, the countries that accept NECO results require additional requisitions such as proof of English language proficiency in an international exam, NECO result, international passport, birth certificate, affidavit of support and NECO scratch card.

Examples of some countries that accept NECO results for undergraduate admission include the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Ghana, Cameroon, Turkey, and Poland. Some schools that accept NECO results in the United Kingdom include Plymouth University, Kent University, Manchester University, and Sheffield University, while in Canada is Brandon University.
