Students Who Turn 16 by August 31, 2025, Seeking Admission to Nigerian Universities are Now Eligible to Be Admitted – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has bowed to pressure and extended the 16-year admission age limit to 2025. This comes after Tahir Mamman, Nigeria’s education minister, had stated that candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education must be 18 years and above.

With the new update, tertiary institutions across Nigeria can now admit students of a minimum age of 16 or those who will attain that age by August 2025, for the 2024/25 academic session.

This change was announced in a letter addressed to vice-chancellors, provosts, and rectors of various universities, polytechnics, and colleges across the country, signed by Mohammed A. Babaji, Director (Admissions) on behalf of JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede.

The statement read:

“The Board acknowledges that some institutions expect the 2024/2025 admission process to extend into July 2025.

“Without compromising standards or infringing on individual institutions’ admission policies, the Board has decided to allow any willing institution to admit candidates who will be 16 years old by August 31, 2025.

“This is without prejudice to any institution that has set its own minimum age requirement of 16 years, which remains unchanged,” he said.

“By this development, you are requested to harvest from your CAPS and send the list of candidates who would be 16 years of age between 1st of January and 31st of August 2025 who are eligible for admission (if any), not later than a week from the date on this letter to enable final decision.”

He noted that this effort aims to ensure equity and fairness, as those whose 2024 admissions extend until August 2025 would not be unduly favoured.

The Board reiterated that any institution that insists on maintaining a minimum age of 16 years as of 2024 is free to do so.
