Peristalsis

Peristalsis is produced by the involuntary contraction of circular muscles which is preceded by the simultaneous contraction of the longitudinal muscles and relaxation of the circular muscles that push the bolus down the digestive tract. It starts in the oesophagus where the strong wave-like motions of the smooth muscle move balls of swallowed food to the stomach.
