In our previous lesson, we explained that simple tense forms refer to the three main divisions of the tense namely the present, the past and the future tense. We then looked at some examples of complex tense forms such as the present continuous tense, the past continuous tense and the present perfect continuous tense.

We will now consider other complex tense forms.

1.   The Past Perfect Tense:

If two things happened in the past, one before the other, the first is indicated by the past perfect tense.

Examples:

    a. The boy had gone home before the teacher came to class.

    b. When the assassins broke into the house, the man had fled to the village.

    c. I couldn’t get into the house. I had lost my keys.

2.   The Past Perfect Continuous Tense:

Change each of the following sentences to reported speech.

Examples:

“There has been an accident,” we thought.

We thought that there had been an accident.

  1. “She lost her money”, they believed.
  2. “I visited Abuja last January”, he said.
  3. “The rabid dog died yesterday”, the veterinary surgeon said. .
  4. “Adamu travelled to London”, Yaro said.
  5. “Ada ate her food”, mother said.
  6. “Mr. Ade called to see Eze”, the servant said.
  7. “The pupils performed well in the examination”, the teacher said.
  8. “I have seen my result”, the girl said.
  9. The Principal asked: “Where did Okon keep the ball?”
  10. Our father asked: “Has Ada’s teacher called to see me?”.

Answers

  1. They believed that she had lost her money.
  2. He said that he had visited Abuja the previous January.
  3. The veterinary surgeon said that the rabid dog had died the previous day.
  4. Yaro said that Adamu had travelled to London.
  5. Mother said that Ada had eaten her food.
  6. The servant said that Mr. Ade had called to see Eze.
  7. The teacher said that the pupils had performed well in the examination.
  8. The girl said that she had seen my result.
  9. The Principal asked where Okon had kept the ball.
  10. Our father asked whether Ada’s teacher had called to see him.
