- Word Problems Leading To Simultaneous Equation
Below are examples of word problems that lead to simultaneous equation.
Example 9.2.1:
A man travels x km at 60 km/hr and y km at 40 km/hr and takes \( \scriptsize 2\frac{3}{4}\) hours for the journey.
If the time taken to travel 5x km at 40 km/hr and 3y (km) at 50 km/hr is 11 hours 42 minutes, find x and y.
Solution:
1st trip:
Time = \( \frac{Distance}{Time} \)
Total = \(\scriptsize 2\frac{3}{4}\)
⇒ \( \frac{x}{60} \: + \: \frac{y}{40} = \frac{11}{4} \)
Multiply both sides by 240
