How We Spent the Holiday:

Emeka: You’re welcome back to school after the long holiday. I am glad to be back.

Dara: Oh It was such an enjoyable holiday that I didn’t want it to end. I hope you too enjoyed it.

Emeka: I enjoyed every bit of it. You know what? As soon as the school closed for the session six weeks ago, I went home to show my report card to my parents. My parents were so impressed with my performance in the promotion examination (you know I came second) that they sprang a surprise for me.

Dara: And what was the surprise?

Emeka: My father just went into his room and brought out an attractive biro-like radio set, which he purchased a day earlier and gave it to me. He even promised that if I was able to clinch the first position in JSS Two, he would give me another surprise package.

Dara: Having seen that I topped the whole class in the promotion examination, my father decided to send me to Kaduna to visit his elder brother, Mr Danladi, whom I had been longing to see. This uncle of mine works at the Peugeot Automobile of Nigeria – PAN, Kaduna. Oh, I was excited. I immediately took my luggage and boarded a Kaduna-bound bus. You remember we learnt about the parts of a car in JSS One. In Kaduna, I had the opportunity, of not only seeing the various parts of a car but also how these parts are assembled, to make a whole car. It was quite an exciting experience. I really enjoyed myself and I didn’t want the holiday to end.

Emeka: I also accompanied my eldest brother, Bala, to his large farm. My brother engages in large-scale mechanized farming. He has all sorts of farm machines; ploughs, ridgers, shellers, harvesters, etc. I also learnt a lot about fish farming. I now know how to set up a fish pond from where I can realise a lot of money.

Dara: Anyway the holiday is gone, let’s plan about the new session. As for me, I am determined to work harder this session to maintain my position. How about you?

Emeka: You know you were called ‘bookworm’ last session, this session I will be called a ‘bookworm’ and I will take the first position.

Dara: Let’s wait and see.

Exercise:

2. What position did Dara take in the promotion examination?

3. Why was Emeka given a radio set?

4. In what class were Emeka and Dara?
