Destructive distillation of coal is the process of heating coal to a high temperature in the absence of air. When heated, it decomposes into solid, liquid and gas.

The liquid and gaseous products can be condensed and collected, the solid product is coke. Products of destructive distillation of coal are:

  • coal tar
  • ammoniacal liquor
  • coal gas
  • coke
