Sodium trioxocarbonate (IV) is prepared in the laboratory by heating sodium hydrogen trioxocarbonate (IV).

 2NaHCO3(aq) \(\overset{heat}{\normalsize \rightarrow}\)Na2 CO3(g) + H2 O(l) + CO2(g)

On crystallization with ten molecules of water, washing soda is formed;

 Na2 CO3 + 10H
