Johann Gregor Mendel (1822–1884) was an Austrian monk, often regarded as the “father of genetics”, who carried out several works in genetics. His studies of the inheritance of traits in pea plants helped to lay the foundation for the later development of the field of genetics.

Gregor Mendel chose pea plants for his experiments for the following reasons:

  • Presence of observable traits with contrasting forms: some plants were tall others short, some flowers were white others red, some seeds were round others wrinkled, etc.
  • It produces many offspring in one cross.
  • Short life cycle (annual plants).
  • He could pollinate them himself since peas are usually self-pollinating.
