- Common Terms in Genetics
Defined below are some common/important terms used in Genetics;
1. Genes: These are heredity units or basic units of inheritance. It is a short section of DNA. DNA, which is short for Deoxyribonucleic acid, is a molecule which carries the genetic instructions or the hereditary materials. Genes are located in the chromosome and are responsible for the transmission of characters from parents to offspring.
2. Chromosomes: These are thread-like bodies found in the nucleus of a cell. They contain genes.
3. Character or Traits: These are inheritable features or characteristics possessed by an organism e.g seed colour, the shape of a fruit. A trait is a unique variation of an organism’s character for example yellow seed colour or purple flower colour.
4. Locus: This refers to a specific, fixed position on a chromosome where a particular gene or genetic marker is located.
