First Generation Computers (1940 – 1956) | Vacuum Tubes:
The first-generation computers used vacuumA vacuum is an area of space containing little or no matter (solids, liquids, and gases). It is a space with nothing in it, not even air. More tubes for circuitry, and magnetic drums for memory. They were often enormous, taking up entire rooms.
They were very expensive to operate and also consumed a great deal of electricity. They also generated a lot of heat. To perform operations, the first generation computers relied on machine language, the lowest-level programming language understood by computers.
