  • Ways of Curbing Cultism

Cultism is a menace to society, especially since it involves the youths who are the future leaders, therefore, steps should be taken to eliminate it before it leads to the demise and destruction of the community.

Solutions to Cultism:

The following are steps that can be taken to eradicate cultism in our society:

1. Public Enlightenment: There should be campaigns by government and non-governmental organizations to educate youth, parents, and other members of society about the ills and consequences of cultism, through mass media like radio, television, the internet, and social media.

2. Vigilance: Parents, teachers, and other adults should be vigilant and watchful. They should monitor the youth, their friends, and their daily activities. They should monitor their phones, pictures, types of movies the youth watch and music they listen to.

3. Moral Instructions: Adults need to be good examples to the youth by truly serving God/Allah, and teaching the youth moral lessons they can use in their everyday life. Teaching Christianity/Islam should be included in the school curriculum, and it is in most schools. Churches/Mosques should organize spiritual seminars and workshops for youths to educate them about the ways of cults.

4. Legislation: There should be strict and tough laws against any individuals who are involved in cultism. Laws that have harsh, negative consequences will deter the youth and even adults from being involved in cults and cult activities.

5. Censorship of the Internet and Social Media: Social media should be checked and censored. Also, the type of films children and youth are exposed to should be monitored closely by their parents/guardians. Government agencies need to censor the sites that children and youth can log on to, to protect them from wrong and dangerous information.

6. Provision of Activities and Skill-Acquisition for Children and Youth: It is important to provide children and youth with positive activities to take up their time. These can be set up by parents/guardians, schools and/or the local government. It is also important to have skill training sessions for the youth so they can be self-reliant and employed.
