What is an Electrophorus?

An electrophorus is a simple device for storing and transferring charges.

Swedish physicist Johannes Wilcke invented the device in the 1760s. Then in the following decade Alessandro Volta improved its design and coined the name by which it is now known.

It consists of an ebonite or polythene disc that is given a negative charge by friction and a metal disc fitted with an insulating handle.
