Matter can be classified in so many ways, such as by texture or colour, size, shape, taste, overall appearance, or even its physical state at room temperature. These are properties we can use to identify them.

For example, Salt is white, odourless, and has a salty taste, while Gold is prized for its beauty, a good conductor of heat and electricity, and has a melting point of 1,063°C.

Matter can also be distinguished, on whether a particular kind of matter can be separated by physical or chemical means.

Physical separation methods include filtering, evaporation, distilling, decanting, and crystallizing. Chemical separation methods include heating to decompose a substance, and replacement of one element out of a substance by another, more active substance.

Also, matter can be classified into living and non-living things. The process of sorting things into sets is called classification.
