When you subtract binary numbers you will need to be careful when ‘borrowing’.

Rules of Binary Subtraction:

The rules of binary subtraction are as follows:

  • 0 – 0 = 0.
  • 0 – 1 = 1 ( with a borrow of 1)
  • 1 – 0 = 1.
  • 1 – 1 = 0.

When you borrow a number during subtraction, it becomes the number of the base you are subtracting from. For example:

  • If you are subtracting in binary then the number you borrow will be 2.
  • If you are subtracting in octal then the number you borrow will be 8.

Below are some worked binary subtraction examples.

Worked Example 1:

Solve 110 – 101
