What is Soil Texture?
This refers to the relative proportion (sizes) of the various particles of the soil. It is also referred to as the degree of fineness or coarseness of the various soil particles.
Contents of Soil Particles:
The particles that make up a soil sample include gravel, sand, silt and clay. Sand, silt and clay are usually referred to as the primary particles of the soil.
Name and Sizes of Various Soil Particles:
Name of Particles | Range of Particles in Diameter (mm) |
Clay | Below 0.002 |
Silt | 0.002 – 0.02 |
Fine Sand | 0.02 – 0.2 |
Coarse sand | 0.2 |
Gravel | Above 2.0 |
