Plants do not have a specialized respiratory organ. Gaseous exchange in plants occurs through the stomata in the leaves, and lenticels in the stems.
Structure of the Stomata:
1. The stomata are found in the epidermis of the leaves. It can be found in both the lower and upper epidermis. They are more abundant in the lower epidermis which prevents excess water loss.
2. The stomata consists of minute pores called stoma, surrounded by a pair of guard cells.
3. The cell wall surrounding the stoma is tough, flexible and thin.
