Friction
Topic Content:
- Meaning of Friction
- Uses of Friction

What is friction?
Friction is a force that acts at the surface of two bodies in contact and tends to oppose the motion of one over the other.
Friction is greater on rough surfaces than on smooth surfaces. The frictional force continues to act as the body moves, once the body stops moving, the frictional force disappears.
Uses of Friction:
Since friction is a resistance force that opposes or prevents motion, it is necessary for many applications where you might want to hold items or do things that prevent slipping or sliding.
Some uses of Friction include;
1. It makes movement possible.
2. Helps us to hold a pen in our hand or write as the case may be.
3. Friction between nails and the wood holds furniture together.
4. Friction between the road and the tyre of a car makes the tyre have a grip on the road.
5. Friction between the ground and our feet makes it possible for us to walk.
6. Friction is used to climb a tree.
7. Lighting a matchstick.
