The Importance of Energy to the Society:
Energy generation affects the quality of life in many ways. People in both urban and rural areas today use vast amounts of energy, energy is used in all sectors. It is used domestically, industrially, in offices, by artisans like welders, saw millers, fashion designers, transporters, and pepper grinders to mention but a few.
Domestically, it is used in air conditioners to keep the room cool, for ironing, and cooking, and industrially, it is used to extract resources and produce goods.
Considering the importance of energy as enumerated above, there is no gain in saying that its generation and availability will definitely affect the quality of life in any society.

How Lack of Energy Can Affect Society:
The following are the various ways in which a lack of energy supply affects societal development:
i. Many self-employed people will find it difficult to work or may not be able to work at all. e.g. hairdressers, welders etc.
ii. Increase in cost of production which ultimately increases the prices of goods and services.
iii. Most homes have resorted to the use of firewood for domestic cooking which brings about the cutting down of trees and this results in desertification, bringing about climate change.
iv. Most businesses/companies have folded up due to poor power supply as they cannot generate the needed energy, leading to unemployment and increased poverty. This inevitably affects the quality of life.
