Telecommunication is the technology used in sending signals, images and messages over long distances by telephones and satellites.

The following services are provided by Nigerian Telecommunication Limited (NITEL).

1. Telephone Services:

This service enables businessmen to send verbal messages to their customers and relation in different parts of the world. Here are various forms of telephone services.

a. Private Business Exchange (PBE): Big organizations like universities, hospitals or companies are provided with this facility. A switchboard which is manned by an operator is provided because of many telephone extensions. This enables communications to take place between people within and outside the organizations.

b. Subscriber Trunk Dialing (STD): This is a trunk call automatically connected to the meter of a subscriber no switchboard operator is needed.

c. Private Telephone Lines: Individuals who are interested can apply for private telephone lines and they will be linked up.

d. Telephones Directories: This is a document which contains the names, numbers and addresses of all subscribers.

e. International Subscribers Dialing (ISD): This provides facilities for international telephone services among people in different countries of the world.

f. Radiophone: It is a mobile radio-telephone service used in vehicles. It is limited to certain areas.

2. Telegram Services:

These are telegraphic messages sent, printed and given to somebody. It enables written messages to be sent quickly from one place to another. It costs more than normal telephone service.

3. Telex:

This service enables subscribers to transmit and receive printed messages over a telecom line. Users must be telex subscribers with their own equipment and code. It makes use of teleprinters to send messages from one subscriber to another at any time of the day or night even after an office has closed.

4. Fax Services: 

This involves the transmission of data of exact duplicate copies of the documents. The original document is fed into the fax machine which reads it and converts it into electronic form so that it can be transmitted over the telecommunication line. The recipient can print the message using a fax machine.

5. Transmission through Satellite:

NITEL provides a satellite for the transmission of events. A satellite is an electronic device which is sent to space and moves around the earth, a satellite is used for communication through radio, and television, and for the provision of information.
