- Meaning of Culture

What is Culture?
Culture is the total way of life of a group of people in a particular community or societyThe term society is derived from the Latin word 'socius' meaning friendship or companionship. Society is a community, nation or group of people who share the same traditions, institutions, rules and... More. It includes the people’s beliefs, language, way of dressing, religion, the food they eat, arts and crafts, technology, greetings, dancing, music, etc.
Culture varies from place to place; for example, every tribe or community in Nigeria has its own distinct culture. A society or community can be easily recognised by its culture. For example, the Yoruba Culture is different from that of the Igbos and the Hausas in terms of so many factors such as food, language, dressing, and more. This is the same case when it comes to the culture of the Igbos and the Hausas.
The ability of an individual to embrace the elements of his/her culture is known as cultural consciousness.
Dynamism of Culture:
Culture is dynamic and not static, which means it is constantly changing, evolving, and adapting. It changes as society changes. These changes occur through various factors like interactions, new ideas, and external influences. For instance, Western Culture has been infused into the African Culture.
Acculturation is the process through which an individual or group becomes part of a new culture. It involves adapting to a new culture when exposed to it.
