The following are considered before charges are made for train services.

1. The quantity of goods.

2. The value of the goods.

3. The weight of the goods.

4. The nature of the goods.

5. The risk of transporting the goods.

6. The general handling charges.

Advantages of Rail Transportation over Motor Vehicles:

1. The frequency of accidents by train is very low, compared to motor vehicle accidents that occur daily.

2. Goods that can be transported by trains, on a single trip, are far more than what vehicles can carry.

3. Canteen services are available on a train, to cater to passengers’ needs while embarking on the journey.

4. Goods carried by trains are weighted and charged at a uniform rate.

5. Trains move on a schedule, no matter the number of passengers on board.

6. Train charges are cheaper, given the goods transported and distance.

Advantages of Motor Vehicles over Rail Transportation:

1. Motor vehicles are faster over a short distance.

2. Motor vehicles can go into rural areas, to sell and collect goods, and passengers.

3. Goods can be picked and delivered on the way, at any time, before getting to the final destination.

4. Goods and raw materials can be collected or delivered, to any factory or office at any time.

5. Motor vehicles can be relied upon for emergency delivery of goods.

6. Motor vehicles do not operate with strict schedules.

7. Motor vehicles are relatively easier to acquire than the train.
