Advantages/Importance of Technology:
The application of technology has improved our lives immensely in all spheres of life, especially in our modern societyThe term society is derived from the Latin word 'socius' meaning friendship or companionship. Society is a community, nation or group of people who share the same traditions, institutions, rules and... More. The following areas will make us appreciate such benefits:
1. Improved Standard of Living: Technology has improved our standard of living in the provision of farm implements, cars, home appliances, mobile phones, and other gadgets too numerous to mention.
2. Economic Growth and Development: The application of technology has improved, the quality of most roads in Nigeria, and the provision of electricity, bridges, and machines for industries.
3. Improved Health Care Delivery: Technology has reduced the death rate and increased life span since most diseases can now be diagnosed with modern equipment.
4. Industrialization: Technology has led to the building of big industries, where most goods are produced in large quantities.
5. Improved Method of Production: With technology, farmers can produce food on commercial, large-scale levels using mechanized methods.
6. Improves Education: It improves the quality of education. Students are able to find accurate, and real-time data and information quickly.
Disadvantages of Technology:
1. Pollution: With industrial toxic wastes and the burning of petrochemicals, our water, air, and land become polluted.
2. Global Warming: Technology like electricity, transportation, etc make use of fossil fuels which release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.The more technology we use the more carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere, which causes global warming.
3. Unemployment: Technology has made it possible for machines to replace men in most industries, which has resulted in job loss and unemployment for most people.
4. Quick Running Down of Natural Resources: With technology, deforestationDeforestation, in simple terms, means the felling and clearing of forest cover or tree plantations to accommodate agricultural, industrial or urban use. More takes place fast and our ecosystem is weakened. We are always afraid that if the trend is not curbed, man runs the risk of turning the earth into a desert of some sort in the future.
5. Social Disconnect: There is an increasing tendency for people to socialize, and communicate via digital devices, rather than through real-life contact. This can easily lead to a sense of disconnect and isolation.
6. Addiction: Social Media, Online Gaming, Blogs, etc, can lead to addiction, and lots of wasted time with little reward.
7. Crime and Terrorism: Examples of this include: terrorists using social media to promote themselves and encourage others; drug dealers using the dark web to trade; online scammers, the dangers of your personal data being stolen or sold, paedophiles using chat rooms and other places to groom potential victims, etc.
