Water of crystallisation is the definite amount of water with which salts are associated, on crystallizing from saturated solution.
Many salts combine chemically with water to form hydrates.
CuSO4(s) + 5H2O \( \rightarrow \) CuSO4.5H2O(s)
The five molecules of water are known as water of crystallization.
Note: The dot (.) in the formula of a hydrated salt denotes a loose association.
Salts that Contain Water of Crystallization:
Copper(II) tetraoxosulphate(VI) pentahydrate. CuSO4.5H2O
