Various uses of the definite article:

When the definite article ‘the’ is attached to a noun, the article may tell us many things about the noun.

(1) To refer to something already mentioned:

Examples:

i. There is a book on the table. The book belongs to Dele.

ii. I saw a goat in our yard but I do not know who owns the goat.

(2) To refer to something unique:

i. The sun rises in the east.

ii. The earth was created by God

(the sun and the earth are unique).

(3) To refer to something that is the only one of its kind in its locality:

i. The post office is at the road junction near the market.

ii. The bank is opposite the post office.

(4) To refer to something known to both the speaker and the listener:

i. The boy came when you were away.

ii. The teacher will mark the assignment for us.

(5) To refer to the entire membership of a class when used with an adjective describing the class:

i. The sick are weaker than the healthy.

ii. The poor abound in many societies.
