Words Associated with Animal Husbandry:

Animal husbandry is the branch of agriculture that is concerned with raising animals such as goats, sheep, cattle, (livestock), pigs, (piggery), rabbits (rabbitry) and chicken (poultry).

Read the following passage and note the words and expressions in bold.

In the Northern part of Nigeria, it is quite common to see herds of cattle. The herdsman moves from place to place in search of pasture. The modern method of animal husbandry is to put the cowherds in an enclosure known as a pen. In this cattle ranch, the farmer provides fodder for the cattle and ensures that they are cared for. The veterinary doctor comes in regularly to ensure that there are no infections. Diseases like rinderpest can wipe out a whole herd. Some cattle are kept only for milk production. The dairy farmer ensures that the cattle are milked at regular intervals. Some of the milk is sold as fresh milk while some are pasteurised. We also get tinned milk, powdered milk, butter, and cheese from milk. Your favourite drink, yoghurt is also made from milk.
