- Summary
A refrigerator is a device used for cooling and preserving food items. It consists of:
i. A compressor or pump which is used to compress and condense vapour of the refrigerant to liquid while the expansion valve allows the evaporation of highly pressurized liquid.
ii. The refrigerant is a volatile liquidA liquid that evaporates readily at normal temperature is known as a volatile liquid. Volatile liquids are liquids that transform easily into the vapour phase. Usually, the vapour pressure of volatile... More that produces the cooling effect in the refrigerator. (Ammonia, ethyl chloride (Freon) and liquid carbon iv oxide).
iii. Cold compartment and cooling fins (or condenser coils): The cold compartment is surrounded by evaporator coils which give out latent heat to evaporate the refrigerant (Freon) and the cooling fins or condenser coils conduct heat away from the condensed liquid.
