Worked Example 3.5.1:

Solve the following:

a. \( \sqrt {\frac{25}{64}}\: \div\: \sqrt {\frac{48}{108}} \)
b. \( \sqrt {\frac{1}{36}} \:\div \:\sqrt {\frac{4}{16}} \)
c. \( \sqrt {\frac{36 \: \times \: 98}{32}} \)

Solution

a. \( \sqrt {\frac{25}{64}}\: \div\: \sqrt {\frac{48}{108}} \\= \sqrt {\frac{5 \: \times \: 5}{8 \: \times \: 8}}\: \div\: \sqrt {\frac{3 \: \times \: 16 }{3 \: \times \: 36}} \\ = \sqrt {\frac{5 \: \times \: 5}{8 \: \times \: 8}}\: \div\: \sqrt {\frac{16 }{36}} \\ =\sqrt {\frac{5 \: \times \: 5}{8 \: \times \: 8}}\: \div\: \sqrt {\frac{4 \: \times \: 4 }{6 \: \times \: 6}}\\ = \frac{5}{8} \: \div \: \frac{4}{6}\\ = \frac{5}{8} \: \times \: \frac{6}{4} \\= \frac{30}{32} \\=\frac{15}{16} \)

b. \( \sqrt {\frac{1}{36}} \:\div \: \sqrt {\frac{4}{16}}\\ = \frac{1}{6} \: \div \: \frac{2}{4}\\ = \frac{1}{6} \: \times \: \frac{4}{2} \\=\frac{1}{3} \)

c. \( \sqrt {\frac{36 \: \times \: 98}{32}} \\= \sqrt {\frac{36 \: \times \: 2 \; \times \: 49}{16 \: \times \: 2}} \\= \sqrt {\frac{36 \: \times \: 49}{16}}\\ = \frac{6 \: \times \: 7}{4}\\ = \frac{3 \: \times \: 7}{2} \\= \frac{21}{2} \\ = \scriptsize 10 \normalsize \frac{1}{2}\)
