In our previous lesson on stress, we examined the stress pattern of two-syllable words. We noted that normal two-syllable words are usually stressed on the first syllable.
Examples are WINdow and TEAcher. However, if a two-syllable word begins with a single letter or a prefix, the stress falls on the second syllable.
Examples are:
- aLONE
- aBOUT
- beHIND
- toDAY
In this lesson, we will examine three-syllable words which are stressed on the first and second syllables. Before we do that, however, it is important to note that primary stress can fall on any syllable in words of more than two syllables. Moreover, there are no rules that cover all words in English. Use your dictionary to find the correct stress positions in words with more than two syllables.
