In our previous lesson, we defined an article as a formal piece of writing which discusses an issue of general interest. We noted the difference between an article and a letter to the editor. We also discussed the formal features of an article, namely, the title, introduction, body, conclusion, and the full name of the writer. Finally, we discussed how you should plan your essay.

 Study the following question and the article that follows it.

 A youth club in your country is organizing an essay competition for youths on the topic: “The problems of being a young person today.” Write your entry.

The Problem of Being a Young Person Today

Young persons – male and female are treasured in every society. Apart from their physical attractiveness and abundant energy, youths are admired because they represent the continued existence of human society. It is in appreciation of this fact that youths, especially in Nigeria, have variously been described as ‘leaders of tomorrow’ and ‘the future generation.’ Nevertheless, it could safely be said that today’s young persons face a bleak future. What are those problems and challenges that threaten the existence of youths and their enjoyment of life?
