What is Physical Education?

Physical education is an integral part of education that develops and improves an individual’s performance physically, mentally, emotionally and socially through carefully planned, selected and guided physical activities.

Physical education is the process of education that deals with activities that develop and maintain the human body.

It is the education of the child through physical activities such as athletics, gymnastics, dancing, recreational activities etc.

The word “Physical” refers to the body and its various characteristics, including, physical strength, physical appearance, physical development and physical power, while education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge.

A physically educated individual has an all-round education because the activities make him or her mentally, physically, emotionally and socially fit.

Brief History:

The history of physical education dates back to ancient Greece, where competition and intensity were second nature. Having a physically fit body was of significant important to the Greeks in those days. It was seen as necessary for improving one’s appearance, preparation for war, and good health at an old age.

Boys would begin physical education either during or just after beginning their elementary education. They were taught by private teachers known as paidotribes.

The main focus though, was to train and educate soldiers for battle.
