  • Effects of Water Pollution
  • Control of Water Pollution

Water pollution is the discharge of foreign substances [pollutants] into water which may become harmful to plants and animals in water and make them unfit for human consumption.

Causes of Water Pollution:

1. Refuse and sewage: Refuse or sewage is mainly organic matter when dumped into water bodies e.g, lakes, ponds, rivers. It is broken down into simple substances by the decomposers, mainly bacteria.

2. Detergents: Detergents like OMO, SURF, KLIN, etc. increase the quantity of phosphorus in water. It stimulates the excess growth of algae which upsets the equilibrium of the aquatic environment.
