Water pollution is the discharge of foreign substances [pollutants] into water which may become harmful to plants and animals in water and make them unfit for human consumption.
Causes of Water Pollution:
1. Refuse and sewage: Refuse or sewage is mainly organic matterOrganic matter is anything that contains carbon compounds that were formed by living organisms. It covers a wide range of things like lawn clippings, leaves, stems, branches, moss, algae, lichens any... More when dumped into water bodies e.g, lakes, ponds, rivers. It is broken down into simple substances by the decomposers, mainly bacteria.
2. Detergents: Detergents like OMO, SURF, KLIN, etc. increase the quantity of phosphorus in water. It stimulates the excess growth of algae which upsets the equilibrium of the aquatic environment.
