Wave Nature of Light

A scientist called De Broglie proposed that matter can behave as wave as well as particles. He suggested that a particle of mass, m, moving with a velocity, v, would possess a wavelength λ, of

λ= \( \frac {h}{mv} = \frac{h}{p} \)

h – Plank’s constant

p – momentum p = mv

This wavelength is called De Broglie wavelength.

Plank’s Theory

This reveals that radiations are emitted in discrete packs or packets of energy known as quanta.

E = hf

λ= \( \frac{hc}{\lambda} \)

c – Speed of light

h – Plank’s constant

f- frequency of radiation

λ = wavelength of radiation
