  • Components of Political Culture

The three components of political culture are:

(i) Cognitive Orientation: It is the knowledge of belief in the political system, political institutions, functionaries, and policies made by these functionaries (Oyediran et al, 2011).

(ii) Evaluative Orientation: This aspect of political culture involves individuals’ judgement, opinion, or assessment of government institutions, their functions, and government officials in a political system (including government actions, programmes, and policies).

(iii) Affective Orientation: It includes the feelings of people towards government functionaries, their performance, government institutions, policies, and programmes. Affective orientation involves feelings of loyalty, support, attachment, or rejection of political objects.

(1) What is Political culture?

Answer:

Political culture can be defined as the attitudes, beliefs, and ideas that guide the behaviours of people in a political system.

 

(2) Explain the three types of political culture.

Answer:

(i) Parochial political culture: This political culture is characterised by political apathy on the part of the people based on low political awareness.

(ii) Subject Political Culture: In this culture, the people are enlightened and politically apathetic.

(iii) Participant Political Culture: In this political culture, there is high political awareness and a high level of political participation.

 

(3) List and explain three components of political culture.

Answer:

  • Affective Component:  This component measure how much the people love their political leaders and political system.
  • Cognitive Component: This component measures how much the people know their government and political system.
  • Evaluative Component: This component measures how much the people can assess or constructively criticize their government or political system.
