1. What is unitary system of government?

Answer: Unitary system is a political system where power emanates from a single source of authority which is the central government.

 

2. Enumerate the features of unitary system of government.

Answer:

  • There is no constitutional division of powers.
  • Allegiance in the state is to only the central government.
  • Power emanates only from the centre.
  • The parliament in this system is supreme.
  • The constitution in this system is not supreme because it can be easily manipulated by the central government.
  • It operates a very flexible constitution.

 

3. What are the merits and demerits of Unitarianism?

Answer:

Merits of Unitary System:

  • The government in a unitary state is usually strong.
  • The citizens are allegiance only to the central government.
  • Decision-making is usually quicker
  • The flexible constitution of unitarism is suitable for emergency periods.
  • The absence of heterogeneity brings unity to this system of government.

Demerits of Unitary System

  • Power concentration at the centre may lead to arbitrariness and dictatorship.
  • The system makes the government very far from the people at the grassroots.
  • The central government under this system can be overburdened.
  • The system can only work in a small country.
  • The system can neglect remote areas in terms of development plans.

 

4. What is republicanism?

Answer: Republicanism is a system where a state is governed by their elected representatives.

 

5. List the features of a republican form of government.

Answer:

  • In a republican state, representatives get political powers through elections.
  • Elections in a republic are free, fair, credible and periodic.
  • In a republican state, there is constitutionalism in which the state is governed according to the constitution.
  • In a republic, popular sovereignty resides with the people.
