What is Power?

It is the ability to control the behaviour of others by a person or persons who possess instruments of force. It is the ability to get things done. People obey because of anticipated rewards or fear of sanctions. 

Sources of Power:

Sources of power include:

(i) Control of Force: Military government can come to power through a coup d’état.

1. What is power?

Answer:

Power can be defined as the ability to control the actions of others through the possession of the means of sanction.

 

2. Discuss exhaustively the sources of power.

Answer:

  • Inheritance: Some people acquire power by the virtue of their birth into a royal family.
  • Charisma: Some also get to a position of power through their special qualities which endear people to them.
  • Position of Authority: Some positions occupied by people give them some form of power.
  • Wealth: Wealthy people have greater chances to acquire power, especially in some African traditional societies.
  • Force: Military regimes derive their access to power through the use of naked force and Coup d’état.
