Military rule is an illegitimate system where the members of the armed forces forcefully take over the government of a state through a Coup d’état .

2. (a) What is coup d’état ?  

Answer:

Coup d’etat is a situation where the armed forces of a state forcefully take over the governance of a state from the elected representatives.

Answer:

  • The military rules through decrees and edicts.
  • Military government lacks legitimacy.
  • Military rule goes against constitutionalism.
  • Military rule is carried out through force.
  • Military rule suspends political activities.

 

3. Discuss the achievements and weaknesses of military rule.

Answer:

Achievements of Military Rule:

  • The unity of Nigeria was preserved by the military.
  • Several infrastructure projects were done by the military e.g. the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
  • Many states in Nigeria were created by the military.
  • The military provided the country with a new constitution in 1979 and 1999.
  • The military was able to carry out some reforms in the Civil Service and Local Government in Nigeria.

Weaknesses of Military Rule:

  • Suspension of the constitution.
  • Illegitimacy of their administration.
  • Violations of citizens’ rights and privileges.
  • Abuse of office privileges.
  • Arbitral rule.

 

4. (a) What is monarchy?  

Answer:

Monarchy is the undivided sovereignty of a single person i.e. a King, Queen or Emperor.

4. (b) Explain the two types of Monarchy.

Answer:

  • Constitutional Monarchy: These are monarchies whose powers are defined by the constitution.
  • Absolute Monarchy: These are monarchies whose powers are unrestricted and unquestionable.

 

5. What are the features of Monarchy?

Answer:

  • It is an age-long form of government.
  • It is based on hereditary system.
  • Obedience to the monarchy is seen as obedience to God.
  • A monarchy could be despotic.
  • It is headed by a King, Queen or Emperor.

 

6. Differentiate between monarchy and republican governments.

Answer:

 

Monarchy

A republic

i.

Assumption of office is based on heredity.

Assumption of duty is based on elections.

ii.

Absolute monarchy does not adhere to rule of law.

A republic adheres to the rule of law.

iii.

The right to rule resides with the monarchy.

Popular sovereignty resides with the citizens.

iv.

The monarchy claims ‘divine rights’ to rule.

The right to rule is gotten from the people through elections.
