  • Meaning of Electrode Potential
  • Zinc ions/Zinc System
  • Copper(II) ions/Copper System
  • Standard Electrode Potential

Electrode potential is the potential difference set up between an element and a solution of its ions.

Electrode potential is also the tendency of a metal to get oxidized or reduced when it is placed in a solution of its own salt.

When a metal (M) is placed in a solution containing its ions (M+ ) (for example a solution of one of its salts), then the metal may undergo oxidation, and then the positive metal ions may pass into the solution.

M(s) → M+ (aq) + e

But if the metal undergoes reduction, then the solution will gain electrons from the metal and deposit themselves as neutral atoms on the metal.

M+ (aq) + e   →  M(s)

The set-up involving the metal electrodes and the solution of their ions is called the metal ions/metal system , M+ (aq) /M(s) or a half cell.

Zinc ions/Zinc System:

If a zinc plate is dipped into a solution of
