Evaluation Questions

    1. Consider the following elements  6C, 11Na, 12Mg, 15P, 16S, 17Cl, 18Ne

    State which of these can:

    (a) Form hybrids by electrovalent bonding

    Answer: 11N, 12Mg

    (b) Be used to catalyse a chemical reaction

    15P

    (c) Be used in radioactive dating

    Answer:  18Ne

    (d) Form an acid anhydride

    Answer: 16S

    (e) Exhibit both metallic and non-metallic behaviour.

    Answer: 6C

    2. (a) How many groups are in the periodic table?

Answer: There are 8 groups in the periodic table

    (b) In terms of electronic structure, state what is common to all the elements in the same

    (i) Group

Answer:  The same number of valence electrons (i.e. electrons in the outermost shell)

    (ii) Period

Answer: They have the same number of electron shells

    3. Write briefly on the characteristics of

    (a) Alkali metals

    Answer:

    • They are group 1 elements
    • They are the most reactive metals
    • They are univalent elements
    • They are strong reducing agents
    • They are good conductors of electricity
    • They react with cold water to liberate hydrogen gas and form alkalis
    • Their trioxonitrate (V) salt decomposes on heat to give dioxonitrate (III) salts and oxygen.

    (b) Alkaline earth metals

    Answer:

    • They are group 2 Elements
    • They are the second most reactive group of metals
    • They are divalent elements
    • They are electron donors and form electrovalent bonds
    • They are strong reducing agents and also good conductors of electricity

    (c) Halogens

    Answer:

    • Most reactive non-metals
    • They are diatomic molecules
    • They ionize to form univalent negative ions
    • They have high electronegativity and are electron acceptor
    • They are strong oxidizing agents

    (d) Transition metals

    Answer:

    • They are found in between group II and III
    • They contain partially filled d-orbitals

    4. (a) Halogens are referred to as salt producers, Explain

    Answer:

Halogens are derived from the Greek words hal (-‘salt’) and –gen (‘to produce’) because they produce sodium salts of similar properties of which sodium chloride table salt or halite is renowned.

    (b) Give five uses of noble gas

    Answer:

    • Argon is used in gas-filled electric bulbs
    • Helium is used in filling balloons
    • Radon is a radioactive element. Radiation is used as medicine for the treatment of cancer.
    • A mixture of krypton and xenon is used in the photographer’s flash tube.
    • Mixtures of helium and oxygen are used by divers.

     (c) State the period and the group to which each of the following elements belongs!

    4V, 13W, 2X, 20Y, 10Z.

    Answer:

4V → Group II, period II

    13W Group III, period III

    2X Group VIII (8 or 0), period I

    20Y Group II, period IV

10Z Group VIII (8 or 0), period II
