Ionic radius is a measure of the space occupied by an ion in the crystal lattice. Metal loses an electron to form a positive ion. The cationCations are positively charged ions (atoms or groups of atoms that have more protons than electrons due to having lost one or more electrons). Cations are attracted to negatively charged electrodes... More formed will be smaller than the original atom.
For example, in a sodium atom with the atomic number 11Na– 2, 8, 1, sodium ion 10Na+ 2, 8, the sodium ion is smaller than the sodium atom. When electrons are lost, the effective nuclear charge is increased and the electrons are pulled in.
