enzymes

Enzymes are biochemical or organic catalysts secreted by living cells which speed up the rate of metabolic reactions such as digestion.

Different enzymes act on different substrates consequently enzymes that break down complex food substances into simpler forms are known as digestive enzymes.

Classification of Enzymes:

Enzymes are classified according to the substrate (substances) they act on

Class of Digestive
Enzymes
Class of
Food
Examples
Amylases

Lipases

Proteases
Starches

Lipids (Fats & Oil)

Proteins
Ptyalin, Amylopsin

Steapsin, Pepsin

Trypsin, Erepsin

Characteristics of Digestive Enzymes:

1. Enzymes are specific in action i.e. they act on only one kind of substrate e.g proteases will only act on proteins.
