- Digestive Enzymes and Their Actions
Enzymes are biochemical or organic catalysts secreted by living cells which speed up the rate of metabolic reactions such as digestionDigestion is the breakdown of large insoluble food compounds into small water-soluble components so that they can be absorbed into the blood plasma. In certain organisms, these smaller substances are absorbed... More.
Different enzymes act on different substrates consequently enzymes that break down complex food substances into simpler forms are known as digestive enzymes.
Classification of Enzymes:
Enzymes are classified according to the substrate (substances) they act on
Class of Digestive Enzymes | Class of Food | Examples |
Amylases Lipases Proteases | Starches Lipids (Fats & Oil) Proteins | Ptyalin, Amylopsin Steapsin, Pepsin Trypsin, Erepsin |
Characteristics of Digestive Enzymes:
1. Enzymes are specific in action i.e. they act on only one kind of substrate e.g proteases will only act on proteins.
