  • Functions of Plant Tissues

Plants do not move around in search of food like animals do and due to their nature, they do not need a highly developed skeletal system like animals. However, plants do need supporting tissues to remain upright, spread out their branches and hold their leaves in position to trap sunlight.

Supporting systems in plants are usually called supporting tissues and they include Parenchyma, Collenchyma, Sclerenchyma, and Vascular tissues (Xylem, Phloem)

Parenchyma:

The main characteristics of parenchyma cells are listed below:

  • The structure of parenchyma is polyhedral in structure.
  • These cells are closely packed or may have small intercellular spaces.
  • They are made up of thin cell walls that are made up of cellulose, and hemicellulose.
  • These tissues are found in the soft parts of a plant such as the roots, stems, leaves, and flowers.
  • Their main function is, to store food, and photosynthesis. Another function is to help the plant float on water

Collenchyma:
