a. Mahogany:
The wood of mahogany is one of the most outstanding materials for the manufacturing of fine furniture. It is popular because of its beauty, durability, and colour. It is used to make furniture, boats, cabinets, musical instruments, flooring veneers, and other items.
b. Maple:
The wood is strong, stiff, and shock-resistant. It is commonly used in high-end furniture, flooring, cabinetry, decorative woodwork, veneers, and kitchen accessories. Because of its durability and strength, maple can be found used as flooring in bowling alleys and for bowling pins.
c. Oak:
This is the most popular hardwood used for crafting American and English country designs. Oak is commonly used for furniture, joinery, flooring, panelling, decking, and veneers.
d. Walnut:
This is a cabinet-making wood with excellent woodworking qualities and takes polishes easily. Walnut can also be used for furniture, small wooden objects, and veneer.
e. Teak:
Teak is used for carving. But because of its high value, it is generally used as veneer. The wood is also used for boat building, exterior construction, furniture, carving, turnings, and other small wood projects.
f. Obeche:
Obeche is an African hardwood native to countries like Nigeria. The characteristics of obeche make it especially suitable for veneer. Other uses include furniture, boxes, and crates, carvings, interior millwork, etc.
g. Iroko:
Iroko is a large tropical West African tree used for a variety of purposes including boat-building, domestic flooring, furniture, veneer, interior and exterior joinery and outdoor gates.
h. Afara:
It is used locally for house construction, planks, roof shingles, fencing posts, dug-out canoes, drums, and mortars. It is used in furniture as either solid wood or veneer.
Note:
In woodworking, veneer refers to thin slices of wood and sometimes bark, usually thinner than 3 mm (1/8 inch), that typically are glued onto core panels (typically, wood, particleboard, or medium-density fiberboard) to produce flat panels such as doors, tops and panels for cabinets, parquet floors and parts of furniture.
