  • Other Minority Groups

The United Middle Belt Congress (UMBC) was made up of the amalgamation of the Middle Belt Party and the Middle Belt Zone League in 1955. The founder was the Late Senator Joseph Sarwuan Tarka (1932-1980).

The supporters of the party came from Tiv in Benue State. Other party members were David Lot, Patrick Dokotri and Isaac Kpuum. The Party recognized other minority parties in the North including the Jos Tribal Union (Berom) and Alago Progressive Union (Lafia Division).

The Party formed an alliance with AG. Through this alliance, AG won twenty-five (25) federal seats in the North in the 1959 elections. It fought for the creation of the Middle Belt region, and although, it did not succeed, the consciousness of the region’s needs was established/brought to the limelight.

Other Minority Groups Include:

  • Borno Youth Movement (BYM)
  • Niger Delta Congress (NDC)
  • Nigeria National Democratic Party (NNDP)
  • Mid-West Front (MDF)
  • United National Independence Party (UNIP), etc.
