Northern People’s Congress (NPC) like the Action Group, evolved from a cultural Organization known as Jamiyaar Mutanem Arewa., founded in December 1949. The North People Congress (NPC) was dominated by the Hausa/Fulanis and it promoted Northern interests.
It attracted the support of Emirs in the North. Northern People’s Congress (NPC) was deeply rooted in Islamic injunctions. The Party leader was the Late Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Saraduna of Sokoto. The motto of the party was “One North, One People”.
Objectives of the Northern People’s Congress (NPC):
- To inculcate party discipline and loyalty in NPC members.
- To promote better understanding and cooperation between members of the Party and the Northern community in general.
- To promote the autonomyAutonomy is the control or government of a country, organization, or group by itself rather than by others. More of the North.
- To gradually achieve Nigeria’s Independence.
- To study and preserve the traditions and culture of the North and adapt them to modern conditions.
- To educate the Northern citizens on civic and political responsibilities.
- To help the Northern citizens overcome Cultural, Social, Political, Educational and Economical barriers that separate them from the changing political and economic conditions in Nigeria.
- To cooperate with anybody or organization whose interests are tallied with those of the party.
Organizational Structure of the Northern People’s Congress (NPC):
1. It had branches in Wards, Villages, and Urban and Rural districts in the North.
2. Traditional rulers mobilized mass membership in rural areas.
3. It organized Party Conventions and Congresses.
4. It had National Executives Council (Committee).

6. The headquarters of the Party was in Lagos.
Finance of the Northern People’s Congress (NPC):
1. It realized funds from enrolment and subscription fees.
2. Funds realised from the sales of Party emblems, Literature, ConstitutionA constitution is a set of fundamental rules that determine how a country or state is run. More of the Party, etc.
3. Levies on Salaries of Parliamentarians and board members.
4. Donations from members and supporters.
5. Income from public lectures and social activities.
