1. (a) State five characteristics of Insects.

Answer:

  • They have a pair or two pairs of wings
  • Body is divided into head, thorax and abdomen
  • They have a pair of antennal
  • They have three pairs of jointed legs
  • Their thorax is divided into three segments: Prothorax, Mesothorax and Metathorax.

 

(b) In a tabular form state three (3) differences between Insects and Arachnids.

Answer:

S/n Insects: Anarchids:
i. Body is divided into three parts:
Head, thorax and abdomen
Body divided into two main parts
Cephalothorax and abdomen
ii. A pair of compound eyes Four pairs of simple eyes
iii. Three pairs of legs Four pairs of walking legs

 

(c) State five economic importance of insects:

Answer:

  • Bees, butterflies and moths help in pollination of flowers.
  • Some Insects are edible e.g. Winged termites while some produce honey e.g. bees
  • Some insects are vectors of plant and animal parasites/diseases
  • They cause injury by biting and stinging
  • They are pests of plants and animals

 

(d) Give an example of the following group of organisms: Cnidaria, Platyhelminthes, Crustacean, Osteichthyes, and Amphibian.

Answer:

  1. Cnidaria: Hydra, Obelia, Sea anemone, Jelly-fish
  2. Platyhelminthes: Tapeworm, Liver fluke, blood fluke, Planaria
  3. Osteichythes: Bony fishes e.g Tilapia
  4. Crustacean: Crayfish, Prawn, Shrimp
  5. Amphibian: Toad, Frog, Salamander, Ovent

 

(2) State one difference each between Hydra and the mammals with respect to:

(i) level of organisation;

Answer:

Hydra is organised at the tissue level while mammal is organised at the system level

 

(ii) symmetry;

Answer:

Hydra is radially symmetrical while mammal possesses bilateral symmetry

 

(iii) number of body layers.

Answer:

Hydra possesses two body layers, e.g. ectoderm and endoderm while mammal possesses three layers.
