Theory Questions – The Cell Structure and Functions

1. List 5 organelles found in a cell.

Answer:

Five organelles found in the cells are: Cell wall, Cell membrane, Cytoplasm, Mitochondria Nucleus

2. State at least one function for each organelle.

Answer:

Functions of:

  • Cell wall: Gives plant cells shape and mechanical support
  • Cell membrane: Selectively controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell
  • Cytoplasm: Cytoplasmic organelles are suspended in the cytoplasm and many reactions take place there, which keeps the cell alive.
  • Mitochondria: Responsible for producing energy from food substances during aerobic respiration
  • Nucleus: Controls and coordinates many activities of the cell.

3. In a tabular form state five (5) differences between a plant cell and an animal cell.

Answer:

  Plant Cell Animal Cell
i. Presence of rigid cell wall. Absence of cell wall.
ii. Presence of chloroplast and other plastids. Lack chloroplasts and other plastids.
iii. Presence of a large central vacuole. Vacuoles are absent but when present are small in size.
iv. Rigid cell wall gives it a definite shape. Has no definite shape.

4. Mention three (3) organelles that are found in both plant and animal cells.

Answer:

  • Cell membrane
  • Mitochondria
  • Nucleus

(a) Mention three organelles that are found in both Plant and animal cells.

Answer: Amoeba, Paramecium, Euglena, Chlamydomonas

(b) Give two examples, each, of organisms that exist in diverse cellular forms.

Answer:

  • Colony of independent cells: Volvox, Pandorina
  • Filament of independent cells: Spirogyra, Zygnema, Vedogonium
